Driving
You need a driving license to be able to drive a car in Sweden. Licences from EU-countries are accepted in Sweden. If you have a license from a non EU country your license is valid for one year. After this date you need a Swedish license. For information on how to switch to a Swedish license, please visit Körkortsportalen (The drivers license portal).
Car imports, registration
If you have a car bought outside Sweden, you must register it at your new address. For further information please visit the Transportation Board's (Transportstyrelsens) website.
Operation and maintenance of a car
Bilprovningen (the Swedish Motor Vehicle Inspection Company) is by appointment of the Swedish government solely responsible for inspecting all vehicles registered in Sweden. All cars are inspected regularly to make sure that they are safe to travel in. Older cars are inspected once a year whereas newer cars are checked less frequently. You will be summoned when your car is due for inspection. For further information please visit Bilprovningen’s website.
When travelling by car in Sweden you must always have the lights switched on - even when it’s light outside. If you are driving a Swedish car you need not worry about this as the lights are always pre set to be switched on. However, on imported cars you may need to turn the lights on yourself every time you start the engine
In Sweden, it is compulsory to have snow tires on your car between 1 December and 31 March. For further information visit The Swedish Transport agency's (Transportstyrelsen's) website.
