Tommy's new favourite city
Transplant Tommy Andersson fell in love with his new city during his five years of engineering studies at Linköping University. Therefore, it was only natural for him to return after a brief work stint in Skåne – and things are looking good for the product developer.
Tommy was born and raised in Åkersberga, outside Stockholm. After studying in the natural sciences programme in upper secondary school, all signs pointed towards Linköping. From 2007 to 2012, he completed his university studies, where he studied to become an engineer with a focus on design and product development.
“I specifically chose Linköping because I had heard so many good things about it being a great student city. And everything really did live up to my expectations”, emphasizes Tommy.
He lived with two of his old friends from Åkersberga, who were also studying in Linköping.
“It was fun and provided a sense of security, but it was a good thing that we studied in different programmes. Then I got to know some new people, with whom I am still in contact today”.
Something that Tommy really enjoyed from day one was how close everything was and the great cycle paths.
“Linköping is absolutely perfect; everything is here and close together. You can easily get around by bicycle everywhere. I have always done that. I have never needed a car living here”.
A return to Linköping after a brief detour
When it was time for his practical thesis work, Tommy ended up at Axis Communications in Arlöv. Skåne called to Tommy because his girlfriend at the time came from there and wanted to return home after studying in Linköping.
“I lived in Malmö for a year, but never felt at home in the city. It was a little too big and spread out for me. So when it ended with my ex-girlfriend, there was no reason for me to stay. Even though I was born and raised in Åkersberga, it felt like a given that I would go back to Linköping”.
Since 2019, he has been working at Utsikt Bredband, a subsidiary of Tekniska Verken.
“I am the product owner for an Internet of Things investment and work with product development. It is about connecting infrastructure and other things in the city, for example, soil moisture sensors at newly planted trees or cameras at recycling centres to register company cars. They need to pay a fee for entry there”.
Basically, it is about community development in different ways.
“I'm really enjoying it; it feels both important and stimulating to focus on sustainable development like we do”, he says.
